Pumpkin Smash 2024 & Food Drive: Fight Food Waste and Hunger!
The spookiest part of Halloween isn’t the ghosts and ghouls—it’s the waste! Join Fertile Ground Cooperative for Pumpkin Smash 2024, a family-friendly event focused on reducing waste, composting pumpkins, and supporting the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. The event will take place on Saturday, November 9, 2024, from 9 AM to 1 PM at Fertile Ground Cooperative, 2228 S Santa Fe Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73109.
Why Smash Your Pumpkin?
In 2023, about 154 million Americans carved pumpkins, resulting in an astonishing 1.9 billion pounds of pumpkin waste. After Halloween, more than 1 billion pounds of pumpkins end up in landfills, where they contribute to methane emissions—a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than CO2. By smashing your pumpkins and composting them, you’ll give them a new life while protecting the environment from harmful gasses.
How it works:
Clean Up: Remove any non-compostable decorations (glitter, stickers, candles, etc.).
Extract the Seeds: Set them aside to avoid sprouting surprise pumpkins in the compost!
Smash: Bring your pumpkins and smash them at Fertile Ground Cooperative.
Compost: Watch as your pumpkins start their transformation into nutrient-rich compost.
Make an Impact Beyond Halloween!
Along with smashing pumpkins, we’re helping to smash hunger. The event will feature $1 donuts, $1 coffee, and $1 cider, with all profits going to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
