Fertile Ground Cooperative, an origin story.

In 2011, after helping to start a small community urban farm, Commonwealth Urban Farms, it occurred to Terry Craghead that someone needed to do something about all of the organic waste going to the landfills in OKC. He founded Fertile Ground Cooperative with the help of some friends who were volunteering at Commonwealth Urban Farm to do something about this problem. Fertile Ground Cooperative is a worker-owned business providing gardening products, compost services, and recycling services that empower the community to protect and preserve human and nonhuman life in central Oklahoma.

In the beginning, the co-op would pick up food scraps on their bicycles, and now it has grown into something much bigger and making even more of an impact in Oklahoma City!

“I think there’s potential here for local, community-scale folks to disrupt the waste industry. When we accumulate waste in these giant landfills and giant incinerators, we’re really creating a disaster. We want to teach people how to compost in their own backyards. We want to teach people that they can compost at their community garden, neighborhood schools, workplaces, hospitals, and universities.”

Fertile Ground Cooperative provides composting and recycling services for homes and businesses and zero-waste services for special events. Our products include; compostable Biobags, finished compost, mulch, soil, and sediment control products.

Our mission is to reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfills. Composting food waste not only reduces the number of greenhouse gasses going into the atmosphere but also creates a valuable soil amendment for use in home gardens. Composting food scraps can be difficult and messy at times, but this is where Fertile Ground comes in. Be part of the solution; sign up for our services today.
